Wong was born in Taishan, China, in 1910. His family emigrated to the United States when he was seven years old. The family settled in Sacramento, California, where Wong attended school and developed a passion for art. He studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts, where he met his future wife, Edith.

After graduating from college, Wong worked as a commercial artist and freelance illustrator. In 1938, he was hired by Disney to work as a background artist on the film Bambi. Wong played a major role in the development of the film's distinctive visual style, creating the lush forest backdrops that became one of the film's most memorable features.

Wong went on to work on many other Disney films, including Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and Dumbo. He also worked on the design of Disneyland, creating the concept art for many of the park's attractions. Wong's work helped to define the look and feel of Disney animation and theme parks.

In addition to his work for Disney, Wong was also a successful fine artist. He exhibited his work in galleries around the world and received numerous awards for his achievements. Wong's art is characterized by its vibrant colors and its depictions of nature and the American West.

Tyrus Wong died in 2006 at the age of 96. He left behind a legacy of beautiful art and a story of inspiration for immigrants and artists alike.
