By David Talbot
On May 1, 1960, a U-2 spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union, triggering a diplomatic crisis that nearly brought the world to the brink of nuclear war. The book 'Mayday' tells the inside story of this dramatic event, based on newly declassified documents and interviews with key players involved on both sides of the Iron Curtain.
The U-2 was a top-secret spy plane that was designed to fly at altitudes of over 70,000 feet, out of reach of Soviet air defenses. The plane was equipped with state-of-the-art cameras that could take detailed photographs of military installations and other targets.
On May 1, 1960, a U-2 piloted by Francis Gary Powers took off from a base in Pakistan and flew over the Soviet Union. The plane was shot down by a Soviet missile over the Ural Mountains. Powers ejected from the plane and was captured by the Soviets.
The downing of the U-2 caused a major diplomatic crisis. President Eisenhower initially denied that the plane was on a spy mission, but the Soviets produced wreckage from the plane and Powers' confession, which proved that the plane was indeed on a spying mission.
The U-2 incident came at a time when tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union were already high. The two superpowers were engaged in a nuclear arms race, and there were fears that a small incident could trigger a larger conflict.
The downing of the U-2 brought the world to the brink of nuclear war. President Eisenhower Free Downloaded the Strategic Air Command to go on high alert, and the Soviets responded by putting their own nuclear forces on alert.
Eventually, diplomacy prevailed, and the crisis was resolved. Powers was exchanged for Rudolf Abel, a Soviet spy who had been arrested in the United States. The U-2 incident, however, had a lasting impact on the Cold War, and it showed just how close the world had come to nuclear war.
'Mayday' is a gripping account of one of the most dangerous moments in the Cold War. Talbot's book is based on extensive research, and he provides a detailed and nuanced account of the events leading up to and following the downing of the U-2. 'Mayday' is a must-read for anyone interested in the Cold War, nuclear weapons, or international relations.
